About the role

We’re looking for a Junior Machine Learning Engineer with experience in computer vision, classification, and detection who is excited to experiment rapidly and help turn ideas into prototypes into real-world products. If you love applying practical machine learning techniques to problems, have a good fraction of what we need, and want to grow in a hands-on environment, we’d love to meet you. This is a 50%, fixed-term contract position, and though Skymapper is headquartered in San Francisco, the role can be performed from anywhere in the United States.

What You’ll Do

• Collect, preprocess, and annotate image/video data
• Develop and train object detection models (e.g., YOLO, EfficientDet, Faster R-CNN) for real-world conditions.
• Experiment with model performance and deployment on edge or low-power devices, optimizing for various use cases
• Build and maintain pipelines for data collection, labeling, model training, and performance evaluation
• Work closely with other engineers to integrate and customize models into prototypes and production systems
• Contribute to a fast-paced, iterative development process where quick learning and experimentation are key

What We’re Looking For

Must Have:

• Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent experience) in computer science, physics, astronomy, engineering, applied math, or a related field
• Relevant experience as demonstrated through projects
• Strong Python skills with experience with common data analysis tools and libraries such as NumPy and Pandas, and common data science and ML packages such as OpenCV, PyTorch, TensorFlow, and scikit-learn
• Demonstrable understanding of computer vision, machine learning, and deep learning fundamentals
• Familiarity with popular object detection frameworks and datasets
• Curiosity, initiative, and a passion for building things that work in the real world

Nice to Have:

• Experience with computational modeling
• Experience building scalable architectures and implementations for data storage, processing, analysis, and ML in the cloud
• Hands-on work with edge devices (ASICs, FPGAs, Raspberry Pi, Jetson Nano, etc.)
• Comfort with quick prototyping and adapting to changing requirements
• Familiarity with version control (Git) and basic software engineering practices
